Introducing Nouvel Édition

There are already more books in the world than any one person could hope to read. For us, that is not a reason to publish less ambitiously. It is a reason to publish more carefully.

Nouvel Édition was founded as an independent publishing house with a simple premise: every book we publish should have a clear reason to exist.

That reason might be an exceptional voice. A perspective that has been overlooked. An idea that deserves more space. A familiar subject approached from an unexpected direction. Or a work that asks to be made into a physical object with particular care.

What matters is that the decision begins with the work itself.

A selective approach

Nouvel Édition publishes across literature, creative non-fiction, essays, culture and selected visual projects.

Our list is intentionally focused.

Independence gives us the ability to make decisions slowly, to take an interest in work that does not fit neatly into a category, and to build a publishing programme around individual books rather than volume.

We are interested in strong writing, but not in one particular kind of voice. We are interested in clarity without uniformity, originality without novelty for its own sake, and books that can withstand more than a single moment of attention.

Some will be literary. Some will be practical. Some will be cultural, personal, visual or difficult to classify.

What connects them is not genre, but conviction.

Editorial first

Publishing begins long before a book reaches a printer.

It begins with reading.

We believe editing should make a work more itself, not less. The role of an editor is not to impose a house voice across every manuscript, but to understand what the writer is trying to do and help the work arrive there more fully.

That can mean asking difficult questions, restructuring a manuscript, refining an argument or knowing when not to interfere.

It also means giving the process enough time.

Nouvel Édition is built around close collaboration between writer and editor, with each project developed according to what the book requires rather than a fixed formula.

The result should still sound unmistakably like its author.

The book as an object

We are equally interested in what happens after the manuscript is complete.

A book is an intellectual object, but it is also a physical one.

Its proportions, paper, typography, cover, imagery and binding all influence the experience of reading it. These decisions are not separate from the editorial process. They are part of it.

Our approach to design is therefore deliberately restrained.

We are not interested in making books decorative for the sake of it. Nor do we believe good design needs to announce itself loudly.

The best editions feel resolved. The visual language suits the work. Nothing appears arbitrary.

The book should feel considered before the first page is read.

Between Paris and Sydney

Nouvel Édition is shaped between Paris and Sydney.

The distance between the two is useful.

Paris carries an extraordinary literary and publishing history: bookshops, journals, criticism, art, typography and an enduring belief in the cultural significance of the printed word.

Sydney offers a different perspective: contemporary, outward-looking, geographically removed from the traditional centres of European publishing and closely connected to the Asia-Pacific.

We are interested in what can emerge between those contexts.

Nouvel Édition is not intended to reproduce the conventions of either place. Rather, the house takes its outlook from both: international in perspective, independent in structure and open to work that moves across borders, disciplines and established categories.

What we hope to publish

We are looking for writers with something particular to say and a particular way of saying it.

That does not necessarily mean work needs to be experimental, provocative or unprecedented. Originality is often quieter than that.

It can exist in observation.

In precision.

In a sentence that makes something familiar newly visible.

We are interested in literary fiction, creative non-fiction, memoir, essays, cultural writing, art and design, travel and selected interdisciplinary projects.

We are especially interested in work that sits slightly outside what is already easy to categorise.

Previous publication is not a requirement.

A clear point of view is.

The Journal

This Journal will operate alongside the publishing list as a broader editorial space for Nouvel Édition.

Here, we will publish conversations with writers and creative practitioners, essays on books and culture, notes from the publishing process, reading recommendations and occasional observations from Paris, Sydney and elsewhere.

It will also offer a closer view of the work behind the books: the editorial decisions, references, questions and ideas that rarely appear once an edition reaches a shelf.

Not every idea needs to become a book.

Some are better suited to a conversation, an essay or a page like this one.

A house in progress

Nouvel Édition is at its beginning.

The list will grow. New writers will arrive. The visual language of the house will continue to develop. Some projects will take forms we have not yet anticipated.

What we hope will remain constant is the standard by which those decisions are made.

Publish selectively.

Edit seriously.

Design with purpose.

Remain open to voices and ideas that deserve closer attention.

And make books worth considering.

Welcome to Nouvel Édition.
